Le Coteau de l’Herm is an 8-hectare naturist campsite in Rouffignac-Saint-Cernin-de-Reilhac, in the Dordogne, in the heart of the Périgord noir. The village of Rouffignac, with its shops and Sunday market, is 3 km away, and the famous Château de l’Herm is 1,200 m away. The site sits halfway between Périgueux and Sarlat, 150 km east of Bordeaux, in the Vézère valley, known for its prehistoric caves.
Of these 8 hectares, only around 1.5 ha are set out as a camping area: 50 spacious pitches of at least 100 m², spread across a central area near the pool, shaded wooded pitches, a sunny “boulevard” and a meadow without electricity for camping close to nature. The remaining 6.5 ha form a wooded area crossed by paths, open for naturist walks.
Taken over in 2018 by a Dutch couple, Manja and Aschwin, after twenty years under the founders, the campsite is a member of the Dutch naturist federation (NFN) and holds the “Agréablement Nu” accreditation, which commits the site to safety, freedom, respect and hospitality.
The campsite is open from early May to early September. Reception is in French and Dutch.
What the site says about its approach to naturism: “Campsite member of the Dutch naturist federation (NFN), accredited “Agréablement Nu”, a label that commits the site to safety, freedom, respect and hospitality.”
The accessible sanitary facilities have hot water and a water point less than 50 m from every pitch, as well as separate toilets for emptying chemical toilets with a rinsing shower. A launderette offers a washing machine, dryer, ironing board and iron. Wifi is free on the terrace, and 4G reception is good across the whole site.
The outdoor bar, with an open and a covered terrace, serves fresh pastries, drinks and light snacks; in high season, barbecue and pizza evenings are held there. A small camp shop sells gas and ice, and fresh bread is available daily in high season. A fridge and freezer are available to campers without electricity, for a small extra charge. A well-stocked library rounds out the common room.
The Zodiac pool (15 × 5 m), with its edge shaped into a “water bed” for sunbathing, is complemented by an enclosed children’s pool. Nearby, a Finnish sauna set in a wooden kota, heated by a stove filled with 300 kg of granite stones, is perfect for gentle evenings. Dogs on leads are accepted on site, and electric bikes can be hired in the neighbouring village.
On site, campers have access to a pétanque pitch, table tennis and badminton, as well as a children’s play area with a sandpit and a swing. Numerous hiking and cycling routes, short or long, start directly from the campsite; the GR36 passes nearby, and the local tourist office publishes a guide to almost 30 waymarked loops of 2.5 to 15 km through the Périgord noir.
The Vézère valley and the Dordogne river, a short distance away, are suited to canoeing, for a few hours or several days, with boat transport organised by local rental companies. Sports fans can also reach tennis courts, a golf course and a leisure park with rope courses and zip lines just a few kilometres away.
The region, rich in prehistoric sites, invites visits to the Lascaux and Rouffignac caves, just minutes from the campsite, as well as the medieval towns of Périgueux and Sarlat and castles such as Hautefort or Puymartin. In summer, several music festivals bring the area around Rouffignac to life, spanning opera, jazz and world music, and a night market is held every Wednesday evening in July and August.
Open from early May to early September.
