At over 900 metres of altitude, in the heart of the Catalan Pyrenees regional nature park, Le P’tit Bonheur occupies a six-hectare site in the hamlet of Escaro, not far from Prades and the Canigou massif. The address sets the tone: the campsite sits on the allée des Gens Heureux.
The grounds are split into two parts separated by woodland: four hectares for the standard camping area and two hectares for the naturist area, which has its own sanitary facilities. This layout, fairly unusual for a mountain campsite, lets everyone choose their own way of staying without crossing paths.
The site has around fifty pitches for tents and caravans, plus about fifteen rental units: chalets, mobile homes and Mongolian yurts. A mountain stream also runs through the grounds, offering an extra spot to cool off in summer, alongside the pool.
Rated 2 stars, the campsite displays its information in French, English, German and Dutch, a sign of an international clientele familiar with the Conflent area.
Le P’tit Bonheur is open from mid-March to the end of November. Its location, around twenty minutes from Vernet-les-Bains and close to the Carança gorges, makes it a good base for exploring the Conflent in both summer and autumn.
What the site says about its approach to naturism: “A two-hectare naturist area, separate from the standard part of the campsite by woodland, with its own sanitary facilities.”
The campsite’s pool is a natural swimming pool of around 250 m³ (19 x 11 m), fed by mountain water and maintained without any chemical products: the water is returned to the river as clean as it was drawn. It is open to all campers, in both the standard area and the naturist area.
The campsite has a small grocery shop, a snack bar and a picnic area with barbecues. A gas bottle exchange point rounds out the practical offer, and wifi is free at reception. Pets are allowed on site.
A launderette with washing machines is available, along with a service point for motorhomes, with waste disposal and a water point. Every pitch can be connected to the electricity supply.
A games room and a table-tennis table keep children busy on rainy days, and the naturist area has its own sanitary facilities, separate from those in the standard part of the campsite and accessible only from that section.
Every Wednesday, an activity brings young and old together around bread: the dough is kneaded by hand and then baked in a genuine wood oven, followed by a free aperitif and a pizza tasting, before an evening dance taster.
The campsite also serves as a starting point for hiking and mountain biking, with several routes accessible directly from the grounds, at the foot of the Canigou massif and the Carança gorges.
The surrounding area lends itself to horse riding, hydrospeed, canoeing and trout fishing in the Conflent’s mountain streams. The little yellow train, a historic tourist line, allows for a family outing from the valley.
Nearby, the thermal baths of Vernet-les-Bains and Thuès round out the stay, as does the fortified town of Villefranche-de-Conflent, a Unesco World Heritage site.
On site, a table-tennis table and a games room fill the quieter days, alongside the campsite’s natural swimming pool.
Open from mid-March to the end of November.
