In Octon, in the Hérault, the naturist campsite Le Village du Bosc overlooks Lake Salagou from a hillside, in a landscape of red earth (the “ruffe”) reminiscent of the Grand Canyon in Colorado. The campsite is part of a 70-hectare area designated for naturism by the commune of Octon as early as 1971, in tribute to Paul Vigné d’Octon, a former naturist mayor. Lodève and Clermont-l’Hérault are each 15 kilometres away, and the Mediterranean is less than an hour’s drive.
Founded in 1976 by Pierre and Nina Rataud, then developed from 1981 onwards, the campsite is now run by their daughter Nathalie and her husband François. The site has 58 semi-shaded pitches over 10 hectares, as well as mobile homes from the O’Hara range and Cylhor bungalows, an unusual cabin-shaped rental built into the hillside, originally made in the family’s carpentry workshop in the Vendée.
Le Village du Bosc is a family naturist campsite, reclassified as 2 stars in July 2022 under the new standards. The site, with its uneven terrain, has nonetheless been equipped with a sanitary block fitted out for people with reduced mobility and a few dedicated pitches.
The campsite is open from 27 April to 23 September 2026. Reception cannot be visited without a booking: the estate is meant to be discovered by staying there.
What the site says about its approach to naturism: “Family naturist campsite; nude hiking trails criss-cross the designated 70-hectare estate, reserved for holidaymakers staying on site.”
The campsite’s snack bar offers takeaway dishes from May to mid-September. At reception, a sales service for local produce rounds out the offering, along with a library with books in French, English and Dutch, board games, a television, a DVD player and a free table football.
A laundry room is available on site (washing machine with detergent, €5 or €7 depending on the load). The campsite also provides, free of charge, an iron and ironing board, a vacuum cleaner, a set of bathroom scales and electrical adapters. Wi-Fi is free, but accessible only at one specific spot on the campsite.
The four sanitary blocks, each decorated around a different theme (Le Salagou, Le Lagon, Le Camargue, Le Mexique), have showers, hairdryers, a baby bath and a changing table; the “Le Mexique” block includes a space and toilets adapted for people with reduced mobility. Toilet paper and an organic disinfectant spray are provided free of charge.
Dogs are welcome on pitches (2 maximum), with a large area for them to run around in and a shaded corner reserved near the pool; they are not allowed in rental accommodation, nor in the sanitary facilities or on the pool’s sundeck. The village of Octon, 2 kilometres away, rounds out the offering with its shops, restaurants and weekly market in July and August.
The campsite offers a pool, a children’s playground, outdoor fitness equipment, a pétanque pitch and table tennis. Numerous naturist hiking trails criss-cross the designated 70-hectare estate, reserved for holidaymakers staying at the campsite.
The atmosphere is livened up by regional meals, dance evenings, wine tastings and Sevillana dance demonstrations. A communal meal is organised every week, often followed by a dance evening.
Lake Salagou, visible from the campsite, offers a unique volcanic landscape between red rock and black basalt; it lends itself to swimming, windsurfing, fishing, canoeing and kayaking, mountain biking, rafting, climbing and hiking. The Cirque de Mourèze, with its dolomite rocks shaped by erosion, is 8 kilometres away.
The village of Octon, 2 kilometres away, offers a tennis court, a multi-sports area, concerts on Thursday evenings in July and August, and a weekly market. Lodève, with its Saturday market, as well as the royal manufacture of Villeneuvette, round out the possible outings in the surrounding area.
Open from 27 April to 23 September 2026.
