Le Domaine de Sarraute is a naturist campsite rated 3 stars, located at Le Houga, in the Gers, in Gascony. Bought in 1997 on land that had been an abandoned farm for over twenty-five years, it was cleared and developed by the owning family themselves, over nearly fourteen years of work.
The estate covers around 26 hectares of meadows and woodland, sloping gently down to a small stream, the Ruisseau de La Saule; only around ten hectares are currently developed, the rest remaining in its natural state. A bamboo grove of around 5,000 m² surrounds a spring, and numerous local tree species (oaks, lime trees, walnut trees, elms, chestnut trees) surround the south-facing outdoor pool. The camping area proper covers around 2 hectares, with 33 pitches of at least 150 m², 28 of them connected to electricity, as well as 4 mobile homes near the pool and the snack bar.
The stated atmosphere is quiet, friendly and family oriented. The estate is committed to sustainable development: electricity supplied by Enercoop since 2016, tempered hot water to limit gas consumption, and lighting in the sanitary building switched off at 11.30pm to preserve night-time quiet and the surrounding wildlife.
The hilly, large site can be difficult for holidaymakers with reduced mobility, who are advised to come accompanied. Motorhomes are accepted up to 7.5 metres long; in bad weather the ground can become difficult to drive on, so calling ahead is recommended.
What the site says about its approach to naturism: “Family-run estate: naturism is presented here as an attitude of respect for oneself, others and nature, rather than simply a beach practice. The site refers any questions to the Fédération française de naturisme, without specifying a licence requirement.”
The snack bar offers quick bites (pizzas, fish and chips), hot and cold drinks including draught beer, local organic beers and local organic wines, as well as ice cream. Bread and pastries can be ordered the day before for the next day, and a few food and toiletry items are available on site for holidaymakers who have not done their shopping. A communal barbecue with 4 grills is available to everyone, next to the shaded picnic area.
Wi-Fi is free and unlimited in the mobile homes; on pitches, 10 minutes are included per 24 hours, beyond which access becomes chargeable through a dedicated provider. The mobile homes are non-smoking and pets are not allowed in them.
3 kilometres away, the centre of Le Houga brings together a bakery, a doctor, a pharmacy, a hairdresser and a mini-market for everyday needs. About a quarter of an hour’s drive away, Barcelonne-du-Gers, Nogaro and Aire-sur-l’Adour offer a wider choice of shops, a hypermarket and two supermarkets for the weekly shop.
On site, holidaymakers have access to a table tennis area, a pétanque pitch, a volleyball area and a few games suited to children under 6, in addition to the south-facing outdoor pool. Once a week, the estate lights the communal barbecue for a friendly dinner where everyone brings along what they want to grill. A guided discovery of the site and tree identification is offered to holidaymakers curious about the estate’s great plant diversity, and gymnastics classes run from mid-July to mid-August, from 3 participants upward.
The setting in Gascony, on the edge of the Landes and Aquitaine, lends itself to walks through the surrounding Gascon countryside. The estate itself, with its bamboo grove and large trees, already offers a vast area to explore: from nowhere on the site can its boundaries be seen, giving a full sense of immersion in nature.
Motorhomes accepted up to 7.5 m; call ahead if weather is uncertain.
